Why Millennials are Choosing to Rent Properties

The American Dream has always been defined as having a good job, making enough money to support your family, and ultimately buying a home. But, times have changed. As economies, people, culture, and generations change, so has the American Dream. Specifically, the part about buying a house. While of course everyone dreams of owning their own home one day, it is simply a not realistic dream for Millennials. The desire is still there, but times have changed too much. Millennials are now opting to rent properties instead of choosing to buy houses.

Why is this? Well, to start, Millennials are known for choosing convenience and flexibility over commitment. In a time of constant jobs changes and the seeking new opportunities, it does not make sense to commit to buying a house which will ultimately tie one down to a specific spot. They favor the ability to pick up and go whenever the opportunity arises. Millennials are a generation of convenience. It is simply more convenient for them to rent a property instead of buy a house.
Continuing on the topic of convenience, Millennials are embracing the constantly changing rental living experience rather than the monotonous home-owner life. Renting a property offers a completely different living experience than what someone would have owning a house. Renting allows for people to experience different environments, different structural layouts, and different communities. This opens people up to a wide array of living arrangements and communities that they would not have been exposed to before. Also, considering the wide array of living experiences and places this Millennial has experienced, if they ever do decide to own a home, they already have a pretty good idea of what they’d like to have instead of buying a house only to discover it’s not quite what you were expecting.
Lastly, cost is a huge part of why Millennials are choosing to rent properties instead of buy houses. Millennials are the first generation to be entering their adult lives in copious amounts of student loan debt. This delays their ability to be financially stable enough to afford to buy a house. Millennials are also obtaining jobs with lower starting base salaries. This combined with high student loan debt makes it incredibly difficult to even think about owning a home. Also, when one owns a home, they are responsible for all of the amenities, taxes, and maintenance, which is expensive. When one is a renter, they don’t have to worry nearly as much about these costs.

Three Things to Do To Find More Qualified Rental Leads

Listing rental properties is hard. But, going through leads and trying to find the most qualified renter is even harder! There is an endless list of things to consider when trying to find the best possible person to rent property to. Should the renter have a certain financial standing? How will you know if your tenant will be reliable? Finding the perfect renter is time consuming and overwhelming. Here are a few things to focus on when trying to find more qualified leads for your rental property.
One way to find more qualified leads is to always make sure to ask possible renters for a referral from previous landlords. This is your chance to see what other landlords have to say about their tenants! You can find out if this particular tenant pays their rent on time, if they are disruptive, if they respect the property, and even the kind of lifestyle the renter has . There is immense value in the information that a landlord can offer regarding a possible renter. Depending on what a former landlord has to say regarding a tenant, you can choose to continue to consider renting property to them.

Another way to obtain more qualified rental leads is to request possible renters for a background check. Background checks can tell you if your possible renter has been convicted of a crime, or if they have been previously evicted from another property. A background check will also tell you if the renter is in the middle of any legal issues or battles. You can see if your possible renter is being sued, owes child support, or any other trends of non-payment and financial issues. Then, you must ask yourself; are you willing to rent to someone with certain convictions or legal issues?

One final thing to consider that will make finding a more qualified lead listing is the prospective renter’s credit score. A credit score reflects the likelihood that someone will pay back a loan. Knowing a lead’s credit score is key to knowing if they will pay their rent on time in full and even if they can actually afford the amount of rent you are requesting. A tenant with good credit will have good financial standing. The better the renter’s financial standing, the more qualified of a lead they become.

Once you have sifted through these three important considerations, you are prepared to select the most reliable renter. All you need to do is screen your possible renters based off personal preferences to narrow down your list of leads.

The Dangers of Sharing Emails and Phone Numbers Online.

The present world we live in is dominated by live feeds, social media updates, tagged locations, and online information forums. It seems like second nature to constantly share information about oneself. In fact, it might even seem strange to to engage in the constant sharing of personal (and sometimes unnecessary) updates and information. Privacy is slowly beginning to fade as we begin to favor transparency. We live in a society that desperately wants to be available, noticed, and easily contacted. A growing number of the population does not give a second thought to posting their email addresses or phone numbers on public profiles and sites. An example of this would be a college student posting their resume on an open job board. Now, let’s stop and think about what information is on a resume; a full name, email address, phone number, home address, and a complete listing of all previous employers and education. This is an extremely personal list of information that now can be accessed by anyone who just so happens to come across the job board. This being said, what are the dangers and threats to consider when personal contact information such email addresses and phone numbers are made public?

One of the obvious consequences to posting personal contact information online would be an increased chance of receiving more spam in your email inbox. You might also receive more calls from solicitors. But, this is more of an annoyance than a danger. So, the question is, “where are the real dangers?”

When your email or phone number is shared publicly online, it becomes a portal for scammers and hackers. Something as simple as your email address actually gives away a substantial amount of information regarding a person. For example, numbers used in an email address could easily reference dates or years personal to the user. Letters or words in emails could reference initials, family names, identifying facts, or locations that can be used to gather and link together other personal information about a person. Posting phone numbers publicly online offers personal information such as location and name. When all of these little piece of information are linked together, one becomes an easier target for scammers to use to their advantage.

Having an email or phone number that is public increases a risk of online abuse and threatening messages. This decreases the well-being of the owner of the phone number and email address. This person can become a victim of manipulation. It is easier to be tricked into giving out or verifying personal facts or information.Whenone shares their personal contact information publicly with a certain company, one runs the risk of having personal information leaked. Their privacy may become compromised as well as the information intended to remain confidential.

Overall, when you post personal contact information such as your email address or phone number, you are chipping away your privacy and safety. There needs to be more awareness regarding privacy and public access to personal information on the internet.
